Abstract

Brown-Sequard syndrome (BSS) is a form of spinal cord injury where only one side of the spinal cord is damaged, resulting in neurological symptoms and defects. BSS is usually caused by trauma, and non-traumatic BSS which can be due to a tumor, cervical cyst, or infection is rare. As the prevalence of BSS in Korea is low, a patient complaining of muscle weakness in one limb is not suspected to have BSS if they do not complain of other characteristic symptoms of BSS such as sensory abnormality on the opposite side. We report a case of a 79-year-old patient with no history of trauma who was mistakenly diagnosed with a stroke, and was later diagnosed with and treated for non-traumatic BSS by the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine.
